Elon Musk Hits Back After Trump Calls Him ‘Off the Rails’, Deepens Rift with Launch of ‘American Party’

In a striking escalation of tensions between two of the most prominent figures in American public life, Elon Musk has delivered a sharp and calculated response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest criticism. The fallout stems from Musk’s announcement of a new political movement, the “American Party,” which he says aims to disrupt the long-standing dominance of the two-party political system in the United States.

Earlier this week, Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to denounce Musk in a blistering post. He accused the Tesla and SpaceX CEO of losing touch with reality, writing, “It’s sad to watch Elon Musk go completely ‘off the rails,’ essentially becoming a train wreck over the past five weeks.” The president appeared particularly rattled by Musk’s open push for a third political party — a concept Trump dismissed as historically futile and inherently destabilizing.

“Third Parties have never worked in America,” Trump declared. “The system isn’t built for them, and all they do is create total chaos. They are nothing more than a recipe for disruption.”

But Musk, known for his sharp tongue and defiant posture, didn’t let the remarks slide. In a quick-fire response posted to his platform X (formerly Twitter), he wrote simply: “What’s Truth Social? Never heard of it.”

The jab — sarcastic and strategic — wasn’t just a personal comeback. It was a calculated blow aimed at diminishing the relevance of Trump’s media venture while highlighting Musk’s own platform as a primary stage for political discourse.

The Bill That Broke the Silence

At the heart of this latest clash is a sweeping piece of legislation signed into law by President Trump on July 4 — what he proudly called the “One Big Beautiful Bill.” The new law includes tax reforms, spending allocations, and, crucially, the elimination of federal mandates that had previously encouraged the widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). Trump hailed it as the “biggest bill of its kind in the history of our country.”

For Musk, who has built his empire on the success of Tesla and the electric vehicle revolution, the legislation is not only economically damaging but ideologically backward. He wasted no time voicing his disapproval, accusing Trump of gutting climate-forward policies to score political points. In a series of posts on X, Musk blasted the bill as fiscally irresponsible and harmful to innovation.

“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” he wrote.

Birth of the ‘American Party’

Musk’s response wasn’t just rhetorical — it marked the launch of a full-blown political movement. On the same day the bill was signed, he unveiled the formation of the “American Party” — a political organization he says is designed to restore liberty, encourage innovation, and challenge what he calls the “Uniparty,” a term critics use to describe the blurred lines between Democrats and Republicans in Washington.

In a patriotic-themed post on July 4 — U.S. Independence Day — Musk released a poll on X, asking whether Americans wanted “independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system.” The response was overwhelming. More than 1.2 million users participated, and by a 2-to-1 margin, voters expressed support for the creation of a new party.

“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” Musk proclaimed.

To further cement his message, Musk posted a meme depicting a two-headed snake — one head labeled Democrat, the other Republican — with the caption: “End the Uniparty.” The image quickly went viral, signaling the cultural impact his political brand may already be having.

A Growing Rivalry

The war of words between Trump and Musk has been building for months. What once appeared to be a cautiously respectful relationship — with both men having shared moments of public agreement and even personal meetings — has unraveled into open hostility.

The latest spat reflects deeper ideological rifts. While Trump has doubled down on economic nationalism, fossil fuels, and populist protectionism, Musk has increasingly framed himself as a futurist-libertarian hybrid: championing technology, personal freedom, and a shakeup of political norms.

Trump has painted Musk’s actions as petulant and dangerous, suggesting that the tech billionaire is lashing out because the EV mandate was removed from the latest bill. Musk, on the other hand, insists the move is about principle — a stand against entrenched power, bureaucracy, and what he calls a “false democracy.”

In one of his most direct posts yet, Musk wrote:
“The America Party is needed to fight the Republican/Democrat Uniparty.”

A Political Storm on the Horizon

With the 2026 midterm elections approaching, the emergence of a Musk-led political party has the potential to shake the foundation of American politics. Whether the “American Party” becomes a serious contender or fizzles out like many third-party movements before it remains to be seen. But what is clear is that Musk is no longer content to be a background player.

He is entering the political arena with full force — with a platform, a message, a following, and a mission.

For Trump, the challenge may now come from outside the Democratic Party, as he faces not only the traditional opposition but a growing insurgency from within the independent and libertarian right — one led by a billionaire who is as unpredictable and influential as he is determined.

As the battle lines harden between America’s most vocal political leader and its most controversial entrepreneur, one thing is certain: the Trump-Musk feud is no longer just personal. It may be the start of a new political war.
